Work Package 7 „Techno-economic Evaluation“

The objective of this work package is to analyze and determine the economic viability of the different fuels considered (regular diesel and biodiesel) for on-site hydrogen production. Another important aim of this activity is to analyse the feasibility of integrating the NEMESIS2+ proof-of-prototype H2-generator into the existing infrastructure of refuelling stations. There are logistic aspects that have to be considered, which have an influence on parameters like the size of the station, the dispenser for the different kinds of fuels used in this project, safety of operation and maintenance, handling of the fuels, etc. One very important aspect to take into account are the codes and standards related to on-site hydrogen production as well as the transport and storage of the fuels used in the proposed project.

Description of work
The work in WP7 is broken down into 2 tasks: 

7.1 Cost analysis (AH, HYG, JM, m19 – m33)

  • Determination of costs (HYG, JM)
    • Estimation of the costs for investment
    • Estimation of the costs to be incurred for hydrogen production
    • Estimation of the costs for the operation of the system
    • Estimation of the costs for the maintenance of the system
  • Determination of incomes (AH)
    • Definition of the service based on the estimated demand
    • Determination of retail prices
  • Estimation of the cash-flows (AH)
    • Summary and integration of the relevant information for the estimation of the cash-flow
    • Determination of the time horizon to evaluate the project approach
    • Estimation of VAN and TIR
  • Sensitivity analysis (AH)
    • Identification of variables and relevant parameters
    • Determination of the range of variability

 7.2 Study on integration into refuelling stations (AH, ABSR, m19  – m36)

  • Specification of components for on-site hydrogen production (AH)
    • Hydrogen generator of the NEMESIS 2+ type
    • Hydrogen storage
    • Types of dispensers for the different fuels used in the project approach
  • Investigation of safety equipment and regulations (AH)
    • Identification of acquisition process for permits for operation
  • Study on setup of future refuelling station (AH, ABSR)
    • Integration of different fuels in the service station (AH, ABSR)
    • Installation of the on-site hydrogen production part of the refuelling station (AH)
    • Identification of the best operation and maintenance procedures (AH)
  • Study on biodiesel integration into hydrogen production system (ABSR)
    • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of sulphur-reduced ABSR biodiesel (produced at plant of Abengoa Bioenergía San Roque with subsequent liquid desulphurisation by adsorption). With regard to the desulphurisation step APTL will provide all necessary inputs to ABSR.
